The Government has commissioned an independent review of the Mental Health Act. It is due to produce its report and recommendations towards the end of the year, but there will be an interim report. The Mental Health Act sets out when people can be detained and treated in hospital against their will. Being sectioned is one of the most serious things that can happen to somebody experiencing a mental health problem.

The majority of UK employers fail to meet basic standards when it comes to supporting their staff with mental health, a study released to coincide with Stress Awareness Month has revealed. Poor mental health is the most common reason for people to take time off work, costing businesses an estimated £10.6 billion in sickness absence and £21.2 billion in reduced productivity per year, according to NHS data.

Hospital staff are sometimes confining patients with dementia to bed through controversial “containment and restraint” techniques, new government-funded research reveals. The findings, paid for by the National Institute for Health Research reveal that nurses and healthcare assistants are raising the siderails of beds and tucking bedsheets tightly around patients with dementia, reducing their mobility.

Donna Ockenden’s daughter, Phoebe, has won an award for her voluntary work for the homeless charity – The Four Streets Project. Phoebe received the Young Citizen of the Year award at the Chichester City Council ceremony in March. Phoebe is one of 26 volunteers who hand out much needed food and supplies every evening to those living on the streets of the city.

The NHS England’s national mental health director, Claire Murdoch, has ordered Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) to boost spending on mental health by more than the size of their overall annual budget increase. They must meet the Mental Health Investment Standard (MHIS) during the new NHS financial year.

The plans could see the board reducing the number of agency and locum staff it uses, which would make a saving of £1m a month.
