Covid vaccination: One dose in care homes gives ‘substantial’ protection

A single dose of the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccine was effective at stopping 62% of coronavirus infections in care homes, a study has found. A team at University College London (UCL) looked at data from 10,000 adults in England with an average age of 86. The research also suggested those who did catch the virus after vaccination may be less infectious. “Our data suggests that both vaccines are effective in frail, older adults,” said UCL’s Dr Maddie Shrotri. The study analysed coronavirus test-result data for 10,412 long-term residents, all aged over 65, at 310 care homes.

Supporting the health and wellbeing of staff has been highlighted among the top priorities of NHS England as it sets out its Covid-19 recovery plan. Other issues at the top of the agenda include recruitment and retention, as well as delivering the Covid-19 vaccination programme and building on lessons learned throughout the pandemic so far. The priorities come as part of an £8.1bn plan to help the health service recover all patient services and provide support to staff following the intense  ‘second wave’ of Covid-19. The NHS Operational Planning Guidance, published last Thursday, stressed that NHS staff “need to be at the heart of plans for recovery and transformations” and that any plans should “reflect the need for staff to get the support, rest and recuperation that they need”.
