The NMC has published new draft midwifery education standards ahead of a planned publication consultation next year. They place greater emphasis on mental health and public health and aim to equip midwives with the skills to identify individual health and mental health needs early on in the pregnancy.

NHS trusts will be forced to publish concerns raised by staff and patients about their care in the wake of the Gosport patient deaths scandal, the health secretary has announced.
In a statement to Parliament, Matt Hancock said he would “strengthen protection” for staff whistle-blowers as he set out the government’s response to the Gosport Independent Panel’s report.
The NMC are proposing changes to the English language test requirements for nurses outside the UK. The Council will be discussing amending the level of ILETS they will accept from a 7 across all four test areas to a 6.5 in writing. The NMC have released a press statement covering the proposal.
A recent report by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has found that three quarters of babies who died or suffered brain damage during birth could have been saved by better care. In fact, hundreds of babies are dying every year because of problems such as poor training and miscommunication among staff.

A joint report by the King’s Fund, Health Foundation and Nuffield Trust had warned that NHS trusts in England could be short of up to 350,000 staff by 2030 if current trends around patient demand, training, recruitment and retention continued. It also stated that the workforce issues actually posed a greater threat than funding to the NHS.
More than 40,000 women in England have not received information regarding cervical cancer screening after a failure to send out letters by the NHS. The errors were made between January and June, including 182 test results that were not sent out which showed abnormalities. The mistake was made by Capita, the outsourcing company. NHS England is in the process of contacting everyone affected.
The Four Streets Project Community Coat rack in Chichester returns for the third year running having ‘re-homed’ hundreds of coats over the last two winters. The aim is to ensure that no one in the city or surrounding area lacks a warm coat this winter.
Founder; Donna Ockenden said “Our simple message is: If you have a spare coat in clean and good condition please leave it on the rack. If you need a coat please come and take one!” Anyone wishing to donate a coat is asked to visit the rack, which will be kept underneath the portico of the city council’s Assembly Rooms in North Street.
The NMC have published their Annual Report and Accounts and Fitness to Practise Annual Report for 2017-2018. During 2017-2018 significant progress in a number of areas has been made but it is clearly understood that there is much more that needs to be done, particularly in terms of the way the NMC treats those they come into contact with.
Problems with staffing and beds at a North Wales hospital have been made public in a health board report. Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board’s (BCUHB) most recent Bundle Finance and Performance committee meeting, showed that Ysbyty Glan Clwyd is below national and professional standards in terms of critical care and anaesthetic staffing.
Eight Assembly members in Denbighshire have called for an inquiry into the now-closed Tawel Fan dementia ward. The group from North Wales are concerned that two investigations into allegations of patient mistreatment on the ward drew different conclusions. Relatives have also called for a new inquiry in a meeting with Health Secretary Vaughan Gething in Llandudno Junction.
The Guardian has reported that rural hospitals need more support to deal with the growing number of young people arriving at major trauma units and A&Es as victims of violence linked to the drug trade. David Hornsby, matron of emergency medicine at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS foundation trust, said it was difficult for doctors to establish a definite link between a trauma case and county lines drug dealing.
