According to a study of more than 12,000 people carried out by researchers, from the University Medical Center Rotterdam, one in two women will develop dementia or Parkinson’s disease, or have a stroke, in their lifetime. The study says that preventive measures could “substantially” reduce the burden of the illnesses. The findings have been published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry.

Growing numbers of patients with learning disabilities are being physically restrained in mental health units, despite ministers telling NHS trusts to use such techniques less often. According to research for BBC Radio 4, staff in NHS mental health hospitals deployed restraints on patients 22,000 times last year, almost 50% more than the 15,000 occasions in 2016.

Increasing numbers of children are suffering from sleep problems and the rise has been attributed to the use of social media and digital devices before bedtime, as well as childhood obesity and mental health problems. According to data from NHS digital the number of hospital admissions for under 16s with sleep disorders has risen sharply over the last six years.

He has asked new national director for patient safety Aidan Fowler and his team to develop the strategy.

A coroner has asked to view files into the deaths of dementia patients who who died on or after staying on Tawel Fan ward at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan, to determine whether any full inquests need to be held. However, some relatives of patients are angry they only found out about this by chance. Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board chief executive Gary Doherty has since apologised for any distress caused.

The NMC are preparing to welcome the first nursing associates in January 2019. Final proposals are being outlined for the regulation of nursing associates, including the skills and knowledge students will need in order to qualify. The nursing associate role will bridge the gap between registered nurses and healthcare assistants and also provide a pathway to becoming a registered nurse for those nursing associates who want to further their career.

A young woman says she turned up at a North Wales hospital saying she wanted to kill herself only to be told the mental health team had “clocked off”. The BCUHB’s Head of Operations and Service Delivery for Mental Health Services in North West Wales, said: “We are working with our partner organisations to develop community resources such as crisis cafes, sanctuaries, and step down services to assist people at times of acute need.”

Staff working on Tegid Ward in the Ablett Unit of Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, say conditions and the demands placed on them mean that patients are at times being neglected.

Donna Ockenden made a visit to the Simpson Centre for Reproductive Health at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Whilst there she saw some inspiring examples of good practice including a parent-to-parent animation to support mothers and families who’ve tragically experienced a stillbirth or baby death and heard about a fantastic new tool the team has introduced to help midwives revalidate.

They have asked Mary Renfrew, Professor of Mother and Infant Health at the University of Dundee to lead this vital piece of work. The NMC are seeking the views of midwives, women, their families, educators, students and advocacy groups, on what the new standards should include.
