Nurse workforce warning in response to Scottish NHS recovery plan

The Nursing Times reports the Royal College of Nursing, (RCN)   says  the Scottish Government must do more to ensure Scotland has enough nurses now and for the future, after ministers released details of their £1bn NHS recovery plan. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Scotland’s health secretary Humza Yousaf launched the plan on Wednesday, which looks to tackle backlogs arising from the coronavirus pandemic and increase capacity in healthcare over the next five years. On workforce, the plan promised to invest £11 million in new national and international recruitment campaigns and in the creation of a National Centre for Workforce Supply. Specifically on nursing, the plan noted that a “record” 4,206 student nurses had started training in 2020/21 and that the number was “set to rise further this autumn”.

Student nurse numbers rise but retention challenges remain for nursing overall.The Nursing Times     

Reports that a rise in the number of students on nursing courses across the UK this year has been welcomed, but it comes with a clear warning on the need to improve efforts to retain students and ensure they enter the registered nurse workforce in future. Figures show that, as of 25 August, 33,240 new students had been placed onto nursing courses across the UK for 2021-22 – up 5% from the year before. Locally, the West Sussex Gazette reports that extra places have been opened at Chichester University’s School of Nursing after high demand. The new facility, which opens to student nurses in September, is being run in collaboration with University Hospitals Sussex

On Wednesday 11 August, Donna Ockenden, Chair of the Independent Maternity Review at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, spoke as part of a panel for The Independent’s special webinar The NHS Maternity Scandal: Inside a crisis. This panel was chaired by Shaun Lintern and the other panelists included: Dr Eddie Morris, president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and James Titcombe, a patient safety campaigner and bereaved father.
